The Criminal Investigation Division is comprised of a division commander, two lieutenants, three sergeants, and 25 officers. The Criminal Investigation Division is responsible for criminal investigations, narcotics investigations, department training, recruiting, and background investigations.
Captain Andrew Spears is the Criminal Investigation Division Commander. He has been with the Sandy Springs Police Department since November 2006. His assignments have included Uniform Patrol, Special Investigations, Criminal Investigations, Staff Inspections, SWAT, and Honor Guard. Captain Spears is a graduate of Penn State University and the University of Louisville’s Southern Police Institute. He was a member of the 27th GILEE Delegation (Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange) to Israel and is also a recent graduate of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Command College.

Lieutenant T. Sheffield is currently assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division and supervises the Detective Unit and Narcotics and Vice Unit. Lieutenant Sheffield has been in law enforcement for over 30 years. He has served with Sandy Springs Police Department since 2008. His background consists of Uniform Patrol, Tactical Operations, Motorcycle Operations, SWAT, Narcotics investigations, and K9. Lieutenant Sheffield has a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Columbia Southern University.

Sergeant G. Gomez is currently assigned to the Detective Unit. Sergeant Gomez started his career with the Cobb County Police Department in 2009. He was then hired by the Sandy Springs Police Department in 2012. During his time with the department, Sergeant Gomez has been assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division, Street Crimes Unit, and Criminal Investigation Division and serves as a squad leader on the Quick Response Force (QRF). He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2022.

Sergeant B. Smith is currently assigned to the Detective Unit. Sergeant Smith began his law enforcement career with the Atlanta Police Department in 2003. Five years later, in 2008, he joined the Sandy Springs Police Department. His experience within the department has included assignments with the Uniform Patrol Division and Special Operation’s Traffic Unit. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in June of 2023 and assigned to the Uniformed Patrol Division. Recently, after two years as an evening patrol sergeant, Sergeant Smith was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Division. Sergeant Smith also serves on the department’s Honor Guard team.

Narcotics and Vice Unit
The Narcotics and Vice Unit is part of the Criminal Investigation Division. The Narcotics and Vice Unit is responsible for investigating narcotics and vice-related complaints. The Unit has investigators assigned to federal task forces, in addition to working local area narcotics and vice crimes.
