The Sandy Springs Police Department (SSPD) was created in 2006, and serves the community with 147 sworn officers. Operations are coordinated from two districts- North and South. Each district is commanded by district captains and comprised of four patrol beats. The patrol division is complemented by specialty units including Street Crimes Unit (SCU), Traffic Unit, Special Investigations Unit (SIU), and Criminal Investigations Division (CID). The SSPD has several specialty vehicles and equipment including the river response boat, Rhino ATV units, river kayaks, and an armored vehicle for tactical response.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA (August 2, 2020) – The Sandy Springs Police Department has made an arrest following an investigation of a fatal vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a pedestrian.


On Sunday August 2, 2020 at 2:40 AM, Sandy Springs Police Officers responded to the area of I-285 East near Northside Drive regarding a pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle. Officers arrived to the area and located the deceased victim on the interstate. About half-mile east from the primary scene, SSPD Officers located a pick-up truck with heavy damage. Through speaking with witnesses, Officers were able to corroborate that this pick-up truck and its driver were involved in the incident. The driver, identified as 32 year old James Daniel Worsham from Acworth, GA was determined to have been driving under the influence and was taken into custody. Sandy Springs Traffic Investigators have charged Worsham with the following:

  • Failure to Maintain Lane
  • Driving Under the Influence
  • Vehicular Homicide
    • Additional Charges are pending*

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
