SSPD Press Release: Officer Involved Shooting Burglary Home Invasion 2021-012772

SANDY SPRINGS, GA (November 20, 2021) – The Sandy Springs Police Department has assisted the Cobb County Police Department with a double homicide investigation in Acworth, GA (Cobb County) on November 18th.

The investigation has revealed that suspect, Matthew Lanz who repeatedly stabbed one of our officers yesterday after breaking into a home on Cameron Glen Drive is the same person responsible for burglarizing a home in Acworth, GA and murdering a husband and wife. Cobb County Police Detectives have now charged 22 year old Matthew Lanz with the following:

  • 2 counts of felony murder
  • 2 counts of aggravated assault
  • 1 count of home invasion
  • 1 count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony

The suspect has been released from the hospital and is now in custody at the Fulton County Jail where he is facing the below Sandy Springs Charges:

  • 1 count of burglary in the 1st degree for the Cameron Ridge Drive incident
  • 1 count of burglary in the 1st degree for the Cameron Glen Drive incident
  • 1 count of home invasion in the 1st degree
  • 10 counts of felony obstruction
  • 10 counts of aggravated assault on a police officer
  • 10 counts of attempted murder on a police officer
  • 1 count of possession of a knife during the commission of a felony
  • 1 count of carrying a concealed weapon without a permit

“We are extremely grateful our police officers were at the right place at the right time to confront this extremely dangerous and armed individual. The quick response by our officers potentially saved the lives of the homeowners, as we now know this suspect had murdered two homeowners previously in a similar burglary in Cobb County. This incident is a testament of the dangers our officers face every day and their commitment to keeping our community safe,” said Sandy Springs Police Chief Ken DeSimone.

Additionally, Matthew Lanz has been identified as the brother of suspect, Austin William Lanz responsible for stabbing and causing the death of a Pentagon Police Officer this past August outside the Pentagon.

ORIGINAL PRESS RELEASE 

SANDY SPRINGS, GA (November 19, 2021) – Sandy Springs Police Officers were dispatched to a burglary in progress at a home on Cameron Glen Dr. Once Officers arrived, they located the suspect still inside the home and a confrontation took place.The suspect ran towards one of the officers and stabbed him multiple times. A back-up officer who witnessed the attack, shot the suspect in an attempt to stop the stabbing. The injured Officer was rushed to a local hospital where he received treatment for his multiple wounds and was listed in stable condition. The suspect, shot at least one time was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive. A second officer was also injured as a result of a bullet fragment hitting his hand.

Incident:

This morning just after 8:30AM, residents from a home on Cameron Glen Drive called 911 to report an intruder inside their residence. Prior to receiving this call, Officers were at the scene of another reported burglary nearby on Cameron Ridge Drive. Those officers immediately responded to the in-progress crime and arrived within a few minutes to find the suspect still inside. Officers attempted less intrusive methods such as the use of a Taser to subdue the suspect; however, the Taser did not have an effect on him. Once the suspect started stabbing the officer multiple times, at least one officer shot the suspect to stop the attack. An additional Officer was able to drag the officer out of the home and started rendering first aid. Once the suspect was no longer a threat, Officers provided first aid until the arrival of paramedics.

The residents of this home were not injured during this incident and are currently being interviewed by our Detectives. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested to assist with the investigation of the Officer Involved Shooting. Sandy Springs Police Detectives are investigating the burglary and assault on those officers at the scene. Lastly, our Detectives were able to corroborate that this suspect was also responsible for burglarizing the home on Cameron Ridge Drive earlier.

The suspect has been identified as 22 year old Matthew Scott Lanz from Acworth. Mr. Lanz had no connection to the this neighborhood and was unknown to the homeowners.

Matthew Lanz has been charged with the following:

  • 1 count of burglary in the 1st degree for the Cameron Ridge Drive incident
  • 1 count of burglary in the 1st degree for the Cameron Glen Drive incident
  • 1 count of home invasion in the 1st degree
  • 10 counts of felony obstruction
  • 10 counts of aggravated assault on a police officer
  • 10 counts of attempted murder on a police officer
  • 1 count of possession of a knife during the commission of a felony
  • 1 count of carrying a concealed weapon without a permit

Once the suspect is released from the hospital, he will be booked at the Fulton County Jail on the above charges.
