SANDY SPRINGS, GA (August 20, 2020) – The Sandy Springs Police Department’s Traffic Unit has made an arrest following the investigation of a fatal hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian.
Incident:
On Wednesday August 19, 2020 at 2:42 AM, Sandy Springs Police Officers responded to the area of GA 400 North near Spalding Drive regarding a pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle. Officers arrived to the area and located the deceased victim on the highway. Sandy Springs Police Traffic Investigators, after speaking with witnesses and gathering evidence were able to determine that the involved vehicle had fled the scene upon striking the victim.
On Wednesday evening, Traffic Investigators, through their investigation learned the identity of the vehicle and driver responsible for causing the death of the victim. Members of the Sandy Springs Police Traffic Unit and Street Crimes Unit located and arrested the driver, identified as 34 year old Hugo Rodriguez-Perez. The suspect was taken into custody at a residence in Douglasville, GA without incident and the 2007 Honda Civic was taken to the Sandy Springs Police Department for processing.
The suspect has been charged with the following:
- Felony Vehicular Homicide, 1st degree
- Felony Hit and Run
- Other charges are forthcoming, pending the conclusion of the investigation
