SANDY SPRINGS, GA — Sandy Springs was named among the safest cities in the United States, according to financial news site 24/7 Wall St. It was the only Georgia city on the list.
The America's Safest Cities report ranked metro areas with at least 100,000 people, using several different criteria.
Our city finished 17th on the overall list.
- 2018 Violent Crime Rate: 117.8 per 100,000 people

"Sandy Springs is a suburb of approximately 109,000 residents located in Fulton County, just north of Atlanta," the report says. "While in Atlanta there were 769 violent crimes reported per 100,000 residents in 2018 — more than twice the national violent crime rate — Sandy Springs is one of the safest cities in the country. In 2018, there were just 118 reported murders, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults per 100,000 residents in Sandy Springs, far less than the national violent crime rate of 369 incidents per 100,000 Americans."
The city of Sandy Springs incorporated in 2005, and it is the sixth largest city in Georgia and the second largest city in the metropolitan Atlanta area.
To find the 50 safest cities in the United States, 24/7 Wall St. went through the FBI's 2018 Uniform Crime Report and found the total number and rates of murder, non-negilent manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.
Thel site also used the U.S. Census Bureau's 2017 American Community Survey to find the median household income and poverty rates for the cities.
Irvine, California ranked as the safest city in the nation, followed by Naperville, Illinois and Murrieta, California.
"The cities with the lowest violent crime rates tend to share several other socioeconomic characteristics as well — notably, economic prosperity. Indeed, the vast majority of the cities on the list have a low unemployment rate and a high median household income," authors of the America's Safest Cities report said.
