Fatal Hit-&-Run Investigation-Arrest

The Sandy Springs Police Department has made an arrest following an investigation of fatal a hit-and-run that resulted in the death of a bicyclist.

Incident: On Friday April 24, 2020 before 6 PM, Sandy Springs Police Officers responded to Glenridge Drive, north of I-285 regarding a hit-and-run incident involving a bicyclist. Responding Officers arrived and located the 57 year old victim that had been struck while riding his bicycle north on Glenridge Drive. The investigation revealed that a white pick-up truck, traveling northbound struck the victim and fled the scene. The victim suffered fatal injuries as a result of this collision.

This morning, members of the Sandy Springs Police Department, Traffic Unit, through their investigation learned the identity of the pick-up truck and the driver responsible for causing the death of the victim. Traffic Unit Officers located and arrested the driver, identified as 42 year old Leonardo Angulo Banos of Norcross, GA. The offender was arrested in the area of Hope Road and Roswell Road in Sandy Springs without incident and the pick-up truck was taken to the Sandy Springs Police Department for processing.

Banos has been charged with the following:

  • Felony Vehicular Homicide, 1st degree
  • Felony Hit-and-Run
  • Reckless Driving
  • Distracted Driving (Hands Free Law)
  • Failure to Maintain Lane
  • Other charges forthcoming, pending the conclusion of the investigation

Banos was taken to the Fulton County Jail on the above charges
