Sandy Springs Police Department Operations are coordinated by two districts: North and South. Each district is commanded by district captains. The North District has four patrol zones and the South District has five. The patrol division is complemented by specialty units including Street Crimes Unit (SCU), Traffic Unit, Special Investigations Unit (SIU) and Criminal Investigations Division (CID). The department has several specialty vehicles and equipment including river rescue boats, traffic response vehicles (TRVs), a command vehicle, and a mobile crime scene response vehicle.
North District Commander
Captain Dan Nable is currently assigned as the North District Commander. Captain Nable started his law enforcement career with the Fulton County Police Department in 1988 until he took early retirement in 2006. Captain Nable was one of the first officers of the Sandy Springs Police Department. His assignments have included DUI Task Force, Motorcycle Operations, Serious Injury/Fatal crash Investigations, and Criminal Investigations. Captain Nable is a certified general instructor. He is also certified as a Firearms Instructor, EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operations Course) Instructor, PIT (Pursuit Immobilization Technique) Instructor, and a Defensive Tactics Instructor, and he assists with many of the classes offered to citizens and the Citizen Patrol. As a Sandy Springs native, Captain Nable graduated from Riverwood High School and attended Georgia State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree. He is also a recent graduate of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Command College.
South District Commander
Captain Norm Vik is the South District Commander. Captain Vik is a U.S. Army Veteran, where he served as a Military Police Sergeant. Captain Vik came to the Sandy Springs Police Department from the City of Hapeville Police Department in 2007. His assignments have included Uniform/Bike Patrol, S.W.A.T, Field Training, D.U.I. Task Force, Serious Injury/Fatality Investigator, Criminal Investigations, and Community Affairs. He obtained his Master of Science degree in Administration of Justice and Security from the University of Phoenix. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officer Course from the University Of Louisville.
